In order to build muscle, our bodies need to be in a state of calorie surplus. This means we are consuming more calories than our body requires to maintain it’s current state or weight. This allows us to be in a positive energy balance which is essential for building and increasing muscle mass. A calorie surplus combined with working out hard in the gym will prompt your body to use the extra calories to build muscle and put on weight.

Hey Jamie,
I just read your MarioKart Gym idea, and I think it would be AWESOME. I used to play that game with my brother until all sorts of weird hours. Imagine if I could have been cardio training for that entire time!

And yes, I agree that it's not necessary to have patrons fall 20 feet to their doom... while it makes for good TV in Japan, it would make for all sorts of good lawsuits in America!

Dan--Hey, I stumbled upon your site today while searching for "Ninja Warrior Gym." Like you, I've been playing around with the idea for a while (along with other fun gym concepts, like the MarioKart Gym idea I posted on the blog today).

But yeah, the Ninja Gym (remove the word "Warrior" and you avoid trademark issues). I completely agree with replacing the water with foam. You want to remove as many risks for injury as possible and make the gym work for kids and adults alike (the focus is on adults, but if you attract the kid birthday party crowd, you're golden). I don't think you'd have to go through the entire course as a whole; rather, maybe you'd have one or two full courses, and elsewhere you'd break up and replicate the individual components. And for some of the training, you don't need an obstacle--you just need a pull-up bar or a situp mat.

I think the space itself would have to be pretty big. I don't think height is a huge issue--on the show they always make it so the contestants fall 20 feet to their doom, but people at the gym could fall...2 feet. And that'd be fine.

I really like the concept--I don't see a place to subscribe to comments to see your response to this note, so if you want to discuss the idea further, just e-mail me.

I also have the same idea and think it would really work. People are so into health and fitness these days...not to mention how cool ninjas are. I work out alot at traditional gyms and I hate it. Its so boring. I want to run the ninja warrior course so bad it would almost be worth it to build the place just for me and my friends. good luck with your idea!

Hells yes, David, I like it! A self-powered gym. It really is absurd to imagine coal being burned in some power plant somewhere, carting the electricity over to the gym, and using it to power the treadmill that lets you run in place and burn off your own "excess" energy. It's not a very logical system. (Unless you're a power plant, that is).

Lol Dan I really like this idea. It's often bothered me that our society screams and screams about wasting energy, but then we go to the gym for hours on end lifting things and putting them down over and over again.

One idea I've had is to have all the weights somehow connected to batteries and such to store all that energy. Yeah it might be small, but if I were the gym owner I would use it to power my gym! The easiest things to connect would probably be the treadmills. I bet they'd really pump out a lot of energy.
